Katie Blanchard PT, DPT is a former collegiate athlete playing 4 years of Division III basketball at Dominican University in Chicago. A season-ending ACL tear during her basketball career opened her eyes to the movement/muscle imbalances in her own body and introduced her to the profession of physical therapy. This injury experience fueled her passion for injury prevention and teaching the importance of proper movement patterns in youth athletes.  Give and Go Physio focuses on ACL prevention programs for female basketball players.  She also serves as a staff physical therapist at Team Rehabilitation in Orland Park, IL.  In this video, Katie Blanchard PT shows us how to use a basketball to help stabilize our core and perform a proper hip hinge.

  1. First, stand and hug the basketball tight to your lower chest.  Pushing as hard as you can.  This will activate your core muscles.
  2. Then you stick your butt out and by activating your core you will not flex your spine forward.  This teaches you to hip hinge with your butt back and your spine in a neutral position.
  3. This is important for basketball players when defending to prevent low and mid back pain common in female players.
